A cause for concern vs a cause of concern

This is a nice expression that came up in the Writing Session this weekend.

The emerging era of artificial intelligence is a cause of/for concern.

Both prepositions are correct - if ever you have any doubt, just go to Ludwig.guru and type 'vs' (= versus) between the two options, and you'll see

  • if both are acceptable
  • which one is more common
  • some really useful examples from reliable sources

For example:

The recent increase in unemployment rates is a cause for concern.
Inflation is always a cause for concern.
emoji negative reaction for 'A cause for concern vs a cause of concern' emoji neutral reaction for 'A cause for concern vs a cause of concern' emoji positive reaction for 'A cause for concern vs a cause of concern'
