But I saw this one on Pinterest and couldn't believe how wrong it was!
Can you correct these? (Answers below)
If a verb can be followed by the gerund (ing), it usually means that it can be followed by a NOUN. So in most of the wrong examples, you don't need a gerund at all.
For example:
❌ He accepted going to the party.
✅ He accepted the invitation.
Answers
- He accepted the invitation to the party.
- He admires his boss/ He likes working with his boss.
- She admitted stealing the money.
- They started using green energy. They adopted a green energy policy.
- They agreed to meet up after work.
- She aims to finish the project before the deadline.
- They are planning to go on vacation soon.
- He appears to be studying the map. (?meaning?)
- He appreciated her help.
- ??? I wish she would stop arguing with me?
- We arranged to go on a camping trip.
- I'm avoiding junk food.
- She began learning/ to learn Spanish last year (both ok).
- I'm considering taking a class on painting.
- They continued studying/ to study until midnight (both ok).
- She craves ice-cream.
- They decided to go to the movies.
- He defended taking an extra day off work.
- We had to delay going to the beach.
- She demands to have her own way (?) She demands her own way (?)
