There are different ways of breaking up these 'run-on' sentences.

A simple full stop is usually enough.

• She made on big mistake. As a result, she lost her job.
• It rained heavily. Consequently, the football game was called off.

In these sentences, the linking word is wrong:

• It's too late, SO* we can't go to the cinema (*'so that' is WRONG)
• He didn't complain to the police, SO* the police took no action. (*'accordingly' is wrong)
• He didn't complain to the police. Because of this, the police took no action. 

NB: The meaning of 'claptrap' is 'nonsense'.
