Contractions: is to 's

I love these mazes by Mark Hancock Pronunciation on Instagram.

Contractions are really important for improving your fluency in speaking, and I also encourage General Training students to use them in Informal Letters (Writing Task 1).

Here's a fun way to test if you are able to use the contraction (sometimes you can't because of the pronunciation).

- The bus is late. (you can't say or write 'The bus's* late' because the final 's' makes it difficult to pronounce. This is true for any word ending in 'sh' 'dge' 's' 'x' 'ch' 'z' and 'ge').

- The train's late. The door's open. The food's ready. The cup's full (OK)

Answer to the maze:

The train's late - The door's open - The food's ready - The cup's full - The man's here - The light's off - The park's empty - The game's over - The picture's dark - The work's done - The street's closed - The flat's cold - The apple's good - The money's gone.
