We did this letter recently in a Members Academy Writing Feedback session:
Your photograph recently won a photography competition and will be shown in an exhibition.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter
- describe the photograph you sent to the competition
- tell him/her about the exhibition where your photo will be shown
- invite him/her to the exhibition
'Would you like to accompany me to the exhibition?'
Question: What's the problem with 'accompany'?
Answer: It's too FORMAL for a letter to a friend.
You need to be brave with informal letters. You might think 'accompany' is a more 'advanced' word, but in General Training, you'll get a more advanced score if you use the appropriate tone.
