Funnest vs the most fun

This week in the Members Academy, we practised this recent Part 2 question:

Tell us about an art or craft activity (e.g. from wood or a painting) that you did at school. You should say

  • what you made
  • how you made it
  • what it looked like

and explain how you felt about the activity.

One of the members said:

"It was the funnest activity I've ever done".

Is this correct?

As you can see (screenshot below), my spellchecker thinks I made a mistake, but is ‘funnest’ wrong?

First of all, remember the difference in meaning:

‘Funny’ = it makes you laugh (funnier, funniest)

‘Fun’ = it’s enjoyable (more fun, the most fun)

Lots of people think ‘funner’ and ‘the funnest’ are grammatically wrong, though they are perfectly acceptable versions.

To be safe though, I would stick to the more common options of ‘more fun’ and ‘the most fun’.

You can also use the uncountable noun form:

‘We had such fun’

‘We had so much fun’.
