How important is the Introduction in IELTS Writing Task 2?
Yesterday I was shocked and a little disappointed when I read a well-known IELTS influencer's new blog about 15 ways to improve your Task 2 Writing:
Obviously, it's not a good idea to spend 20 minutes on the introduction but it has a very important function, so I strongly disagree with teachers who say 'just paraphrase the question' and get the introduction 'out of the way'.
A strong introduction is essential for many reasons:
- It sets up the structure of your essay, helping the examiner follow your logic (Coherence and Cohesion Band 7 - there is clear progression THROUGHOUT)
- It contains your stance/opinion (Task Achievement - presents a clear position THROUGHOUT)
- It shows the examiner your 'flexibility' 'precision' and 'control' with vocab and grammar (Band 7 criteria) when you DON'T rely on rephrasing the question.
- Examiners are human - they start making their assessment from the first line. Some examiners actually think the first line is all they need to read to make a quick assessment.
Of course, if the rest of the essay is outstanding, the introduction will matter less, but you SHOULD spend time and thought on your introduction.
