Pronunciation: how it helps Listening: I'll vs I will

When we do Speaking practice in the Academy I ALWAYS remind my students to use contractions like "I'll" "I'm" and "I'd".

For some reason, "I will" is the most stubborn one, the one that takes the longest to get used to.

BUT if you don't practise SAYING it naturally, you won't be able to HEAR it. You'll be listening for "I will" and you'll miss "ul" or "al", which is what it sounds like.

I was making this video for the Listening Bootcamp Day 16 today and I found plenty of examples.

What do you hear in this extract?

  • "I will" (2 syllables)?
  • "I'll" (1 syllable)?

You may need to listen a few times.

NB there is one "I won't".
