Instill vs install

'instil' (US) or 'instill' (UK) is a useful word for IELTS Writing Task 2.

Take this question, for example.

Task 2 Question: Should school uniforms be compulsory?

'Supporters of school uniforms argue that they instill discipline and a sense of pride.'

If you 'instill' something, you put a feeling, idea, or principle gradually into someone's mind, so that it has a strong influence on the way they think or behave.

Collocations with 'instill':

  • (positive) confidence, respect, knowledge, belief
  • (negative) fear, prejudice, hatred
  • a sense of (e.g. pride, belonging, community)

Install = to put a piece of equipment somewhere and connect it so that it is ready to be used.
