'Meet' or 'Meet with'?

I overheard a teacher today saying that 'meet' means to 'encounter someone for the FIRST TIME*'.

That's just one meaning though. Of course you can say "I met a friend for coffee", meaning that you got together for a chat.

But what about 'meet with'? For example "I met with my tutor".

The meaning is slightly different - it suggests that the meeting was pre-arranged.

Personally, I don't use 'meet with' - is it an Americanism? I'm not sure.

Is it becoming more popular? Possibly, according to Google Ngram.

Do you say "meet" or "meet with" or both?
