3. Tips - Hashtags

In our last newsletter we talked about keywords and optimizing them for your content to be found thus converting to sales. Today we will review doing the same but for hashtags.

Being sure you use hashtags correctly and that are optimized for what you are doing is a priority. Just throwing hashtags up on your posts is a waste of time. The suggestions below are mainly about Instagram but can be adjusted and applied to other channels.

And at the end of this tip I have a gift of fabulous Fall Hashtags!

The goal is to get discovered by new people who will become engaged and thus convert on your affiliate links.

Why do you want to use hashtags?

• Increase engagement
• To be found in discovery by new people
• For your posts to be suggested to people

The 101:

• Stay within the context of your post
• Capitalize the first letter of each word in a hashtag
• Be sure you have a hashtag for what is in the post: post a flower, use #flower
• Keep hashtags short and easy
• Be relevant
• Use hashtags your audience or desired consumer is using
• Use a balance of sized hashtags depending on the size of your account

The musts:

• Monitor your hashtags
• Know what is trending
• Use related hashtags to larger hashtags
• Review hashtags every 30 days

Use Hashtags that are:

• Small
• Niche
• Engaged

What size and flow hashtags should be used for Instagram? Let’s base this on accounts with less than 100,000 followers.

Use:

• 1-2 Hashtags that are over 2M (but be sure you use the hashtags for what is in the image in addition)
• 2-4 Hashtags that are between 500K and 2 M

• 1000+ to 25K
• 25K to 100K
• 100K to 250K
• 250K to 500K

Flow - (# of times the hashtags gets used a minute or second - thus when your post is pushed down in discovery)

Best way to hand check flow: go to recent posts from the hashtag - see how many times the # was used in an hour.

Use:

• 1-2 hashtags that have a flow that are greater than 30 an hour- or change
• 5-10 hashtags that have a flow of less than 30 an hour
• The balance should be 3-10 an hour

In conclusion:

• Check your analytics
• Make your goal to get on the “top” in discovery
• Be sure to have one branded and one optimized hashtag in your bio
• Divide your hashtags between your post and the comment in Instagram
• Be sure to use hashtags in Instagram Stories

Guide to the Number of Hashtags to use:

• Instagram: 11-30
• Instagram Stories: no more than 10
• Twitter: 1-2 for highest engagement
• Facebook: 1-2
• Pinterest: 1-2
