3. Tips - Why the Conversion Rate Matters
Many affiliate publishers look at the commission rate as the primary factor in deciding what programs to promote. That data point may seem like a solid metric to use for this decision... until the math shows you there may be a better way. Let me explain.
Let's say there are two programs: Program A pays affiliates a 10% commission rate and Program B a 5% rate. Sounds like Program A at 10% is the winner, right? Maybe, but often not.
For starters, high commission rates are usually needed for programs that have a low conversion rate (CR). The CR is the percentage of prospective customer clicks leaving your site headed to the advertiser who actually end up buying. Since affiliates are only paid on performance, you want to maximize the CR since the sale is out of your hands once your reader leaves your site.
CRs vary greatly across programs and for many reasons. Common reasons for variation include quality of the "landing page," price, user experience, shipping terms, and product selection to name just a few things. If you have an advertiser that is only able to convert 1 of your site's exit clicks into a buyer out of 100 you send them, that's a 1% CR. For some programs, that may be a good CR but for others it would be extremely poor.
So, back to our fictitious advertisers: Let's say Program A has a 1% CR and Program B has a 3% CR while the average order value (AOV) is $100. If you sent 100 customers to Program A, your earnings would be just $10; but if you sent the same 100 customers to Program B, your earnings would be $15 (which is a 50% improvement over Program A!). That difference becomes even more stark as the CR spread increases.
In summary, to maximize your earnings you should know your site's CR for each program and then multiply that value times each program's AOV. Using that data matched with your exit traffic numbers, you can estimate your earnings potential and finally do an "apples to apples" comparison of the program opportunities available - and then maximize your earnings.
Now regarding Perdue Farms, last week's affiliate clicks yielded a 13.3% CR on an AOV of $123.87 (affiliate channel-wide data averaged). I've been involved in affiliate marketing for over twenty years and it's rare to find numbers that good.
