honestly this seems like a no brainer, not sure why I can't answer "do you have 4 bikes to rent today?" right away with ease...

Actually you can do this easily: (e.g. in Planner 2.0)
- select the time period you're interested in (e.g. double click on today's date
- click the activity selector for 'bikes with no activity'
